SUMMARY
  • Nonfarm payrolls increased by 227,000 in November, with upward revisions to October’s and September’s payrolls. The percentage of individuals unemployed for 27 weeks or more reached a new cycle high of 23.2% in November, while the unemployment rate rose slightly from 4.1% to 4.2%.
  • Employment gains throughout 2024 have been primarily driven by the education and health services and government sectors. Education and health services have added nearly 800,000 new jobs, while 400,000 new government jobs have been added year-to-date. In contrast, the manufacturing and information sectors shed jobs, with nearly 100,000 manufacturing jobs lost over the past 11 months.
